by Elizabeth Camden
Elizabeth Camden is quickly becoming one of my new favorite authors. This is the second book I have reviewed by her (the first was: Into the Whirlwind and it was excellent!) and all of her other books are on my list of books I want to read soon.
This book is about Kate and Trevor. In school they were arch rivals competing in everything. In the end they were competing for a full college scholarship and Trevor won and Kate was beside herself because it was her only opportunity to go to college. She ends up working for the census bureau until one day a new Dr in town asks her to interview for a position working for him with charts and numbers and statistics. She loves math and wants a more challenging career so she goes for the interview only to find out it is Trevor and he has changed his last name!
I love books with a background in history. This book explores the time when tuberculosis was threatening lives and leading people to move to the mountains to seek treatment. But Trevor is searching for a cure right in Washington DC and he needs Kate's help to track the numbers in his treatment trial. At first Kate doesn't want to work for him but in the end she takes the job.
I think what I love about Camden's books more than anything else is that they don't just center on the love relationship. They actually center more on the historical background and the plot as a whole rather than just the love story between two characters. This gives her books a lot of depth and makes them really fun to read. I looked forward to learning how the search for the cure of tuberculosis was going even more than I looked forward to finding out if Kate would ever stop hating Trevor.
This book is especially good because the plot has suspense and intrigue and also because there are some surprises you find out about that will shock you. You won't want to put the book down until you have finished!
