The Cautious Maiden

The Cautious Maiden
By Dawn Crandall

So I'm super excited to introduce you all to this book! It is an amazing story and if you check out the endorsements at the beginning you'll find one from me! Yes, that is how much I loved this book!

About the Book
Violet Hawthorne is beyond mortified when her brother Ezra turns their deceased parents' New England country inn into a brothel to accommodate the nearby lumberjacks; but when Violet's own reputation is compromised, the inn becomes the least of her worries. In an effort to salvage her good name, Violet is forced into an engagement with a taciturn acquaintance; Vance Everstone.

As she prepares for a society wedding, Violet learns that her brother had staked her hand in marriage in a heated poker game with the unsavory Rowen Steele, and Ezra had lost. Now Rowen is determined to cash in on his IOU. With danger stalking her and a new fiance who hides both his emotion and his past, Violet must decide who to trust and who to leave behind.

My Review

I grew to love Crandall’s writing with the first three books in The Everstone Chronicles and have been dying to read book four, The Cautious Maiden, and was not at all disappointed because it was worth the wait! Finally a chance to read Violet and Vance’s story it quickly became my favorite in the series.

Crandall writes in the first person from the point of view of her heroine, Violet, and within a few pages I was inside her head. I deeply connected with Violet and really felt her emotions.  At times I even found myself gasping with surprise or swooning from the romantic moments. And I found myself really appreciating Vance’s character too. My favorite part about his character was his dedication to reading his Bible. I loved how it was such an important part of his life that he took it with him everywhere and not just to hold but to actually open and read.

I love books where the characters aren’t perfect and Vance is far from perfect. I found his character refreshingly honest with faults and struggles that are just as relevant now as they were in the setting of the story. It was reassuring to watch him cope with his struggles and to work hard to stay pure. I also really liked that he actually talked to Violet about what his temptations were. The dialogue between Vance and Violet really felt like I was eavesdropping on important private conversations. They didn’t have a perfect relationship but instead had to work through some difficult conversations. It really made the story that much more realistic and believable.
This book was a fast read for me because the plot was so well paced with just enough cliff hanger chapter endings to keep me wondering what would happen next and just the right amount of suspense to keep me guessing.
Of all Crandall’s books this one is the most swoon worthy. I loved the romantic relationship between Vance and Violet. I loved how bold Violet became. I like it when the girl makes a move occasionally! I really enjoyed watching their relationship unfold and loved the kissing scenes that were far from chaste!
I’m so thankful for Christian authors that write engaging and entertaining stories that still point me to God. Vance’s ever growing relationship with God was inspiring and reminded me how important it is to draw near to God by reading and studying His word. But Violet’s attitude of forgiveness was also enlightening. If she could forgive Vance some of his many sins then I can learn a lot from her about forgiving others and striving to give them a clean slate to move forward with.
I loved this book so much that I read it in one sitting the same day I got it. I was hooked within a few pages and the book was almost over before I was sure how it was going to end. I am already looking forward to a book five.

The publisher sent me an advanced copy of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
