Protective Duty by Jessica R. Patch
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This story keeps you on your toes! From the very beginning with the first surprise in the story I was hooked. I couldn't wait to see what would unfold both on a personal and professional level for both Eric and Bryn. And while we're talking about Bryn I have to say that I just love her name!
The familiarity between Eric and Bryn gave this story a special tone. I alternated between wondering if they would be able to stand each other and wondering if they would get together. The friendship between a guy and a girl is always different and it gave this book a unique background. It also gave their professional working relationship and edge because they could anticipate the other person's thoughts.
I really loved the suspense in this book. I read so many books that I can usually gauge who the bad guy is and in this one Patch kept me guessing until the very end. And she threw in some great twists that gave this book just the right amount of grit while still being a good clean Christian romantic suspense.
I also liked the spiritual development Bryn in this story. Patch used one of my favorite verses, Isaiah 43:2, toward the end and I'm not sure I've ever read a book where an author picked a more perfect verse to use in her story. I especially appreciated how Bryn came to peace with God on her own terms and not because someone was badgering her.
The only parts of this book that didn't make it a perfect read for me were Bryn's level of honest with her partner and Eric's protection of Bryn. There were too many times that both of these bothered me. I was especially bothered when Eric didn't go the extra mile all the time to protect her because for me that would have made him the perfect hero.
This was a wonderful read and I enjoyed getting to know Eric and Bryn throughout the pages of Protective Duty and I'm looking forward to whatever Patch comes up with next!
